songwriting

I have been writing songs since at least the start of high school. If I was doing it before then I honestly don’t remember. And after all that time, it’s only been the last five years I’ve begun to have any confidence in my ability. I’ll post a few samples here from across the spectrum and at various stages of the process.

To Have A Little Girl
“To Have a Little Girl” — musical theater (2010)
lyrics by Lauren Caltagirone
vocals by Leigh Taylor, recorded by Dallas Taylor
music, programming, and production by Jeremy Scott Olsen
This is meant as the opening number of an unproduced musical written as the prequel to Annie.

“A Row of Bricks” — rock (2005)
music, lyrics, performance and production by Jeremy Scott Olsen
A rough, acoustic version of a tune I hope to flesh out with full rock’n’roll instrumentation.

“Heart, You’ve Got to Watch Yourself You Know” — swing (2014)
music, lyrics, vocals and production by Jeremy Scott Olsen
In this super-rough version you hear me singing to simplistic chords banged out by an iPhone app called ChordBot. I’ve found it to be a great tool for working out melodies in swing tunes over all those extended chords and more complicated progressions. Can’t wait to orchestrate this one.

untitled — country-western spoof (2015)
music, performance and production by Jeremy Scott Olsen
Good ol’ trail ricin’ music, written for an animated segment of a video yet to be released on the web. As soon as I have permission, I’ll post it.
