I have to share some great new music from a friend of mine. Nathan Schafer, working under the name Peaks of Valleys, has just released a fantastic album called Fallen Out Of Line.
Throughout the album, a pretty mix of electronic grooves, ethereal soundscapes, and “real-life” acoustic guitars and other instruments supports Nate’s understated, breathy voice. His musical influences range from Zepplin to Radiohead to Nine Inch Nails, but on a playlist, most tracks from Fallen Out of Line would sound right at home nestled between The Postal Service and (one of Nate’s favorites) The Appleseed Cast. The songs are tight, and the musical choices are comfortable without being cliche and clever without being overwrought. If you like to get lost in the sound of an album, this is a good one.

I like the lyrics, too, but if I have one overall complaint it’s that these mixes hide Nate’s voice more than I’d like. There are whole sections of songs where the vocals are (purposefully) lost in a sea of reverb to beautiful artistic effect… but leaving me frustrated to not hear what’s being said. I prefer the parts of the album where the voice is more front-and-center. All that aside, not only do I love the music, but the whole thing is well-recorded and well-produced.
I think anyone with a love of indie pop or a hunger to discover fantastic new music will enjoy this one.
Fallen Out Of Line can be purchased on iTunes or at peaksofvalleys.com/.
For those single-track buyers willing to forgo a good album experience to just get the best tracks, I think if you had to buy only one track here it would be the second, called “The Line.” If you were to buy two more it would be track three “Unsolved,” and track five, “Crest.”
Still, better to get the whole thing, I say!
