Virtual choir: performance, and technology, and… wow.
Composer Eric Whitacre, known for stirring choral compositions, has for several years been doing an experiment he calls “Virtual Choir”. He makes a guide track available for one of his pieces—something to sing along to—and asks the public to record themselves singing their part on camera and send it to him. In this particular rendition, “Virtual Choir 3,” you are apparently hearing 3746 voices from 73 countries performing together. Whoa.

Check this out: guitar strings silhouetted against the sky, filmed from the inside of a 12-string guitar as someone plays a tune called “Lick Mountain Ramble.” The “stop-motion” effect induced by the very nature of video lets us see the lengths & shapes of the waves which are resonating through each string.

Their sound and feel and style are so distinct that their fingerprint on the music they play is every bit as unique and influential as a great singer’s voice. Is it a coincidence that so many of them played with iconic singers and bands?
